A SOCIETY WITHOUT ART, IS A DEAD SOCIETY.

A society without art, is a dead society.

I've doodled, sketched and made art since I was old enough to hold a pencil. Even today, old, and retired from the business of art, give me a pencil and I immediately begin to sketch out a memory.

Journal Entry - September1, 2009.

While walking home this afternoon I found a pencil. I had just crossed the street with the traffic lights when, there it was, lying on the sidewalk. It was in perfect condition, black with a silver eraser holder. It was brand new. I knew that it was brand new because the lead was still sharp and the eraser was unused. I was beside myself. I realize that some would find this strange, but for me anything that can make marks be it a pencil, pen, brush, or crayon represents an opportunity for expression of one form or another. With a pencil I can write a poem, or an essay. It also enables me to make marks and to express the endless imagery that constantly runs through my mind. If I had found a used pencil I wouldn't have been as excited. You see a used pencil has been emptied of most of its possibility. A brand new pencil, however, is filled to brimming with possibility. It was a treasure to behold. I rushed home, and with my brand new pencil began to make marks.

With Covid-19 dodging our every move we tend to shelter at home going out only to purchase groceries, and to attend to necessary medical appointments. As the result, we have time on our hands, and when reading becomes tiring I'll pick up a pencil and scratch out a scene, but of late I've taken to replacing the pencil with a bit of technology, a drawing program on my computer. It's quite amazing, the possibilities. Perhaps, it's the future? Should we survive Covid-19 intact, I'm thinking that an iPad and a magic pencil might, just might, replace my pencil.....

Island- Georgian Bay.   Digital Sketch.  2021

I mentioned that I'm no longer pursuing the business of art, so in the interest of making art available and our society healthy, anyone who may wish to copy my sketches for their personal use, feel free to do so. All that I ask is that should you do so you might acknowledge my efforts to make the world a better place.
